Greensboro, NC -- The High Point Furniture Market starts in a little over a week. While you know it's important to our area, the market is also extremely important to area businesses, like catering companies.
In fact, Pepper Moon Catering, a Greensboro-based company, said they moved their kitchen to the High Point line to be closer to the market a few years ago. Why the big move? Co-owner Meredith Williams said the fall and spring furniture markets add up to 35 percent of their business for the year.
"The furniture market is special," said Williams. "It is very different from most events."
Williams said they expand their kitchen during "market time" so they can accomodate all the food they need to work with. She also said they will work 18 hour days providing food to the various manufacturers who hire them.
"We have 30-plus furniture market clients," she explained. "And one client may be a party for 300 people. One client may be breakfast, lunch and cocktail parties for seven days."
Caterers aren't the only businesses cashing in on market. Party rental companies, like Party Rentals by Lisa, said the five-day event is about 50 percent of their business for October.
Happy Rentz said the market is about 80 percent of their business for October. These companies are renting out tables, linens, glassware and more.
