Greensboro, NC - Stokes County Sheriff's deputies raided a puppy mill Tuesday that led to 129 puppies being sent to the Guilford County Animal Shelter.

Guilford County Animal Shelter Director Marsha Williams said the raid will, "hopefully open the eyes of the community and encourage people to start calling their legislators and writing the letters and standing up for the animals who have no voice and to start adopting animals."

While dog breeding is legal in North Carolina, it is illegal to abuse animals and neglect them. Williams told News 2's Patrick Phillippi that the conditions of the puppy mill were terrible, including mice eating the dog's food as the dogs were delivering puppies.

Williams said always consider adopting a dog first, but if you want to buy from a breeder, visit the breeding facility and look at the conditions the puppies are in.
