Los Angeles, CA-- In a bid to promote exercise and reduce obesity, Los Angeles County supervisors approved an ordinance requiring new developments to have bicycle parking and wider sidewalks, among other changes, the Los Angeles Times reports.
The ordinance, which affects unincorporated areas of the county, expands the width of sidewalks to 5 feet, requires bicycle parking within developments and increases shade on sidewalks, the Times says.
"Obesity rates go up where people have no choice but to get in the car," says Ben Saltsman, planning deputy for Supervisor Zev Yaroslavky, the newspaper reports. "Wider sidewalks and bike lanes will help give people another option."
Your Take: Will widening sidewalks help reduce obesity? What would be a better option?
