Winston-Salem, NC -- Police are trying to determine why two children who were critically injured in a house fire were left home alone.

Fire crews responded to 1809 Trellis Lane in Winston-Salem around 11:40 Thursday night.  The home is a part of a complex called LaDeara Crest Estates.

With flames and smoke visible from the home, crews searched for victims.   They located a 3-year-old boy and 8-year-old girl unconscious in their bedrooms.  The two were brother and sister.

Emergency crews conducted CPR and they were taken to Baptist Hospital.   They are currently listed in critical condition.

Capt. David Clayton with the Winston-Salem Police Department said the children were improving at the hospital as of Friday morning.

Clayton said it appears as though the fire started in a storage area in the home.

A police investigation revealed that the children's mother, Ms. Ebony Mack, left them home alone.  Clayton said Mack was interviewed following the fire.  No charges have been filed against her at this point.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
