Burlington, NC - Pimento cheese has long been a staple of the the south, and you have to go no farther than Burlington to find one of the most popular spreads around.
Stan Hudgins, a grocer in the 50's started his pimento cheese operation as a side business. Fast forward to 1983 when a distributor visited with Hudgins and asked if he would be interested in promoting his product.
Hudgins agreed and now the product bearing his name can be found in Harris Teeters, Food Lions, and Lowes Food stores from as far away as Florida to Washington D.C.
This five person operation makes on average 25,000 pounds a week. The secret to its success according to Hudgins daughter Sherry is the passion of the employees and the ingredients they use. "Very few people still use what you can call real cheese and we get our cheese from Wisconsin. You could come along and use imitation cheese and save money and all that stuff but no like I said our recipe is what built the name Stan's", says Sherry Hudgins Tapp.
