Gastonia, NC-- Police say a woman and her teen daughter are facing DWI charges after they were caught leaving the scene of a wreck and switching seats.
The Gastonia Police Department told WBTV they responded to a traffic crash at South New Hope Road and Redbud Drive on Sunday around 3:35 p.m. When officers arrived, they said Hayley Morgan Powell, 18 was driving a 2005 Chevrolet sedan when she struck another vehicle and fled the scene of the wreck. Once away from the scene, police say that the teen switched seats with her mother, Robin Lane Powell,45 who had been riding in the passenger seat.
Officer D.K. Hunter told WBTV that "[Robin Powell] switched from the passenger to the driver and admitted that her daughter was under the influence of prescription pills" The officer also said "[Robin Powell] admitted that she had been using cocaine and other prescription medication."
Investigators said both women submitted to a blood test and, were then charged both with DWI and aiding and abetting driving while impaired. The teenager, Hayley Powel, is also charged with hit and run. Police said the mom is also charged with driving with a revoked license.
WBTV also reports that this is not the first time the two have been charged with driving while intoxicated. The station said both mother and daughter have been arrested for DWI in the past. According to police records, the mother, Robin Powell Powell, is currently facing a DWI charge dating back to November 18.
Records show that Robin Powell has been arrested eight times since May 2008. The daughter, Hayley Powell, has been arrested 11 times since October 2009.
