UNC's Quinton Coples Selected 16th Overall By N.Y. Jets

Chapel Hill, N.C. - North Carolina defensive end Quinton Coples was selected with the No. 16 overall pick by the New York Jets in the 2012 NFL Draft Thursday evening. Coples is the 20th first-round pick in UNC history and the fourth in the last five years.

"They (Jets' coaches) knew I could get to the quarterback and help this team get to the Super Bowl," Coples told ESPN radio. "It's good to be a Jet. I'm just going to go out there and be the best pass rusher I can be."

This is the second consecutive year North Carolina hasproduced a first-round defensive end. A year ago, Robert Quinn was selected No. 14 overall by the St. Louis Rams.

A two-time first-team All-Atlantic Coast Conference performer, Coples played both end and tackle at UNC. A native of Kinston, N.C., Coples finished his four-year career with 40.5 tackles for losses and 24 sacks.

As a junior, Coples played a majority of the season atdefensive tackle and had his most productive season with 15.5 tackles for losses nd 10 sacks. Last season, he moved back to defensive end and posted 15 tackles for losses and 7.5 sacks.
