New Rochelle, NY (Sports Network) - Lamont Jones finished with 43 points to
lead the Iona Gaels to a 105-86 victory over the Canisius Golden Griffins in
Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference action at the Hynes Athletic Center.
For the Gaels (18-5, 10-2 MAAC), Scott Machado added a double-double with 14
points and 14 assists, while Mike Glover also posted a double-double with 12
points and 11 rebounds.
The Golden Griffins (4-18, 1-11) were led by Gaby Belardo with 27 points,
while Alshwan Hymes scored 23, Harold Washington added 13 points and Josiah
Heath chipped in 12 points.
Both teams shot well to open the contest. Canisius hit on 56.3 percent of
its field goals, including 7-of-14 from three-point range. Iona connected
on 51.3 percent from the field, and 6-of-12 on their three-point attempts, as
the Gaels took a 51-47 lead into halftime.
After intermission, the Golden Griffins fell off the pace somewhat, but still
managed to make 48.1 percent of their field goals, including 3-of-7 from
three-point range. The Gaels turned up the heat, hitting on 62.5 percent from
the field and dropped in 7-of-13 three-pointers. The Gaels pulled away in the
second half and downed the Golden Griffins to secure the season sweep.
Iona dominated in the paint, outscoring Canisius 50-32. The Gaels also
scored 23 points on 16 Golden Griffin turnovers, while committing just six
turnovers themselves.
