Hurricane Terms

Tropical Storm
Organized system of thunderstorms with winds of 39-73 mph. All tropical storms are given a name.
Tropical Storm Watch
Issued when tropical storm conditions pose a possible threat to coastal areas within 36 hours.
Tropical Storm Warning
Issued when tropical storm conditions include possible sustained winds of 39-73 mph which are expected to reach a coastal area within 24 hours or less.
Hurricane
An intense tropical weather system of strong thunderstorms with sustained winds of 74 mph or higher.
Hurricane Watch
Issued when there is a threat of hurricane conditions within 24-36 hours. Stay alert.
Hurricane Warning
Issued when hurricane conditions are expected within 24 hours or less. Coastal and beach communities begin evacuation procedures when a warning is issued.
